Ibn Mas’ud narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said:
[Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2416]
The subject of this hadith is the “Last Examination”. In the Hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned five questions to the people of the Day of Judgment. And said that until each of these five things is questioned. Until then, no one will be able to escape.
It is as if a student is asked to take the exam questions before the exam so that these questions will come up in the sheet, remember them well. Of course, a student who already knows about the questions in exams will never fail. So you have already informed the questions to be raised on the Day of Resurrection by blessing your Ummah. Following are the questions that will be asked:
1- In what ways have you lived your whole life?
2- In what tasks did you spend your youth?
3- Where did you earn your money from?
4- Where did you spend your wealth?
5- How much knowledge did you practice?
In verse two of Surah Malik of the Holy Quran Allah (S.W.T) says:
[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed – and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving –
Whereas in Surah Al-Mu’minun, Allah (S.W.T) asked:
Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?”
[Surah Al-Mu’minun, Ayat- 115]
As the whole life of a human being is a test, so the Prophet said that on the Day of Judgment, his life will be asked about where did you spend this life? Allah has imposed some duty on every human life where he wants to see it. And in some places he does not want to see the man, but he is sorry that wherever Allah wants to see us, we disappear from there. And wherever God does not want to see us, we are there.
The second thing and the question in this hadith about which one will be questioned, Where did you spend your life? And this is because youth is very addictive. In adulthood, great mistakes are made by man. Because in these days, the health and strength of the human being are on the rise. And especially sexual desires and lust tempt a person to do bad things, but the one who repents in youth and is free itself from sins, has such a high status in Islam because in old age a man has no power and zeal to do a sin.
So, you (ﷺ) said that the second question would be what did you do in your youth? Shaykh Saadi said, “Repentance in the youth is a propitious thing; in the old age, the cruel one also becomes godly.” Therefore, man should protect his youth.
The third question to be asked in this hadith is that the human being will be asked, what were the sources of the wealth you have earned in the worldly life? Was it lawful and legitimate or earned from illicit means?
Lawful earning is so important in Islam that the Prophet Karim said that “the greatest duty after prayer is to try lawful earning.” In another hadith, he said that “nine of the ten components of worship are lawful earnings”
The term lawful earning is the name of earning in accordance with the rules prescribed by the Islamic Shariah. So any money that is earned by illegal means other than Islamic laws will be haraam. And will be questioned on the Day of Judgment.
By the way, the blessings of illicit and forbidden wealth are taken away. And the prayers of such a person are not accepted while the sins of the unlawful earner are not forgiven as well as the self-confidence and self-esteem of the unlawful person is not created.
Such earners commit crimes such as injustice, dishonesty, bribery, usury, robbery, hoarding, deception and betrayal, which are the major obstacles to national economic development.
The fourth of the question to be asked on the Day of Judgment, which the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said in this hadith is: O man, in what places did you spend the money you earned? Just as it is prohibited and unlawful to make money from illegal sources, it is prohibited to spend your earnings in the wrong places.
In the Qur’an and Hadith, there is so much virtue in spending money in the right ways and in doing good deeds that there is no limit. In Surah Al-Baqarah verse 261:
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
In Surah Al-Furqan, verse 67, Allaah says, while pointing to the virtues of His righteous servants, He says:
And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate
As it is very important to earn lawful earnings in Islam and spend it in the expense of righteousness, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) warned that he will be asked about it on the Day of Judgment.
Today, we spend our wealth on worthless and useless things. Millions of rupees are spent on ritual wedding ceremonies, and likewise, money is wasted at dances and festivals. Therefore, there are many works where money is being spent while in all these cases there is neither fear of Allah nor fear of the Day of Judgment. That is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that on the Day of Judgment you will be questioned about where he spent his wealth.
In this hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said about the fifth question asked on the Day of Judgment. It will also be asked, how much did you practice to the words of the religion that came to you?
In his last sermon, Prophet Muhammad repeatedly asked, “Tell me, did I convey to you the message of Allah, and then you raised your finger to the sky and said,” O Allah, bear witness that I Conveyed your message to your servants. And all this religion that you have brought to us is in the form of the Qur’an which you have fully described in your deeds and intentions. However, till the Day of Judgment, it is the responsibility of the Muslim Ummah to remain active in the propagation of this religion.
As if no one today can say that I do not know about religion۔ Therefore, on the Day of Judgment, it will be asked how much you acted on the knowledge of this religion. Because the act is the real salvation. Regrettably, our practice is empty today. We talk a lot about religion but we do not practice it.
