Right of Wife in Islam

Good behavior

Good behavior is the very first right of wife in Islam. The husband’s first duty is to treat his wife kindly so that the house becomes a paradise. Allah(S.W.T) says in Quran:

وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ

And live with them in kindness. Al-Quran [4:19]
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) says: “The best among you is he who is good for his wife.” On the occasion of the farewell sermon, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: O people! Fear Allah for the rights of women and treat them kindly.

Dower (Haq Mehr)

Haq Mehr is the most important right of women in Islam. It is the right of a woman and it is the duty of a man to pay Dower (Haq mehr) to a woman.Allah says in the Holy Quran: And give women their Haq Mehr with happiness.Yes, if they willingly give up some of it, then eat it with joy.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The most important of the conditions you meet is to fulfil it Due to which you have made the honor of women lawful for yourself. “Whoever marries a woman in exchange for a Haq Mehr and intends that he will not pay her, is adulterer.”

Alimony (Nan Nafqa)

Alimony refers to the husband providing the house, clothing and food for his wife. As Allah(S.W.T) says in the Holy Quran, In Surah Al-Baqra Ayat 236:
“The wealthy according to his capability and the poor according to his capability”

Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. Al-Quran[4:34]
Prophet ‏Muhammad (ﷺ) said: The first thing that is placed in the scale of man’s deeds is to spend his wealth on his family. If a man is reluctant to perform this duty, then the woman can take her right through court.

Equality

It is the right of wife in Islam that his husband treat her equally like other wives (if have). The duties of the husband include that if he has one or more of his wives, he should act fairly between them. And if he does not get this ability within himself, then he should perform the duty of one wife. In Quran, Surah Al-Nisa, Ayat 3 Allah (S.W.T) said:

Marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one

Saying of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ): A man who has two wives and who is completely inclined to one and who ignores the other emerges with one side of his body paralyzed in the Day of Judgment.” (Hadith; Ibn Majah, Nikah, 47; Mishqatl’l-masabih, 2/196)

The woman is not naturally willing to tolerate any other caste between herself and her husband.

Secrecy

The husband’s duty is to keep his wife’s love secret affairs secret. Both are aware of each other’s many flaws and flaws in living a marital life. It is mandatory for both of them not to be exposed. The Qur’an says:

هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَّكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَّهُنَّ

They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Al-Baqarah[Ayat-187]

Because the purpose of clothing is to cover the human body. Nabi Muhammad (ﷺ) said: On the Day of Judgment, the worst man will be the one who knows and reveals his wife’s secrets.

The kindness with the wife’s relatives

Like a wife, the husband is also obliged to treat his in-laws and relatives with kindness. And continue to admire and admire the wife in front of them so that the relatives of the wife may advise her to respect her husband as much as possible.

Along with the relatives, he should be courteous with his wife’s friends so that the honor of his wife will be increased in the eyes of his friends. Hazrat Muhammad (ﷺ) used to treat her beloved wife Ayesha Siddiqa’s (R.A) friends with special kindness and affection.

Khula

It means the separation of wife from his husband in return for a payment. The husband takes the payment and let her go. Whether this payment is the Mehr, the payment he gave to her at the time of marriage, or more or less than that. In Islam the wife has right to take khula’ form her husband. The Prophet has given this right to many of his companions wives.

Right of Inheritance

In Islamic law, the wife is entitled to one-eighth if she has a child, and one-fourth if she has no children, on the death of her husband.
